When architects specified two AluCopper anodizing colors for Isala Meppel Hospital in The Netherlands, Euramax approached Beckers to develop a coating solution. We organized a workshop in Dormagen, Germany, bringing together the building owner, architects, construction company, Euramax, and Beckers to refine the color concept and create a customized dual-tone system for the project.
Project overview
This collaboration with Euramax built on an established partnership that includes Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Cité du Vin in Bordeaux. The project required a facade with distinct dual-tone appearance using mica interference pigments combined with a specialized siding profile. The coating needed to create dynamic visual effects that shift with viewing angle and lighting conditions.
Project challenges
The original specification called for matching two AluCopper anodizing colors. Key challenges included:
- Developing a color system that achieved the required flip-flop effect – the variation in color and gloss depending on viewing angle – for true dynamic tone shifts.
- Ensuring the dual-tone coating adhered properly to the special siding profile
- Aligning all stakeholders on final color selection through multiple testing and discussion rounds
Product overview
The solution is a three-layer system:
- Epoxy primer for adhesion and durability
- Basecoat providing core color effect
- Pearlescent clearcoat with mica interference pigments enhancing the dual-tone flip-flop effect.
Solutions offered
The system delivered the specified dual-tone effect:
- changing hues based on light and viewing angles
- while providing proven durability, UV resistance, and weather performance necessary for exterior architectural applications.
Product features
The collaborative workshop process between architects, Euramax, and Beckers resulted in two custom colors and a facade that received the 2022 MDG Architecture Award for outstanding design in metal roofing and facades.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates how technical coating development and architectural vision combine through collaborative problem-solving. The Dormagen workshop approach –bringing all stakeholders together to refine requirements and test solutions – enabled Beckers and Euramax to deliver a technically complex coating system that met both aesthetic specifications and performance requirements for a healthcare facility facade.
