Premium finishes for waterfront architecture: Al Qana, Abu Dhabi

Situated in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Al Qana stands as a remarkable waterfront development project nestled along the scenic Khor Al Maqta waterway in the heart of the city. 
Envisioned as a versatile mixed-use destination, Al Qana seamlessly integrates entertainment, dining, leisure, wellness, and retail experiences. Beckers supplied the paint for the Aluminium Composite Panels used for the façade.

Extending over 146,000 sqm, Al Qana entertainment center offers a unique collection of attractions (restaurants, cinema, a yacht marina, an innovative fitness and wellness facility, retail boutiques, … and the Middle East’s largest aquarium !). This level of services and offers needed a qualitative, durable and aesthetic façade which we recommended to do with Beckry®Tex 390 paint system with deep matt effect to avoid any disturbing water reflection at any time of the day.

Project challenges

  • Architect’s pre-selected colour : the shade was a 
    bright white colour with value L above 93. Getting 
    such high L value during coil coating process is a 
    major challenge both for paint supplier as well as 
    coil coater.
  • Matt Wrinkle Finish : The colour was required in 
    fine wrinkle matt finish with extremely low gloss, 
    in range of 3-4 units only. Since the project is 
    located next to waterside, the reflection of water 
    should not be seen at any time of the day.
  • Durable and High performance – Given the 
    project's prestige,the long-term performance was 
    a prerequisite.

Solution offered

Sighting all the challenges, Beckers RAK team pulled in expertise from Beckers Poland and proposed the best fit in condition paint system of the range. The sample was developed in Beckry®Tex 395 (Matt Fine Wrinkle) which was a perfect match for the project requirements.

To ensure the desired performance, a mock-up at the site was proposed and immediately accepted by the customer. This allowed Beckers to present a realistic visualization in the form of a small construction on site, creating a meaningful impression of the aesthetic rendering in natural light in its final environment.

The Technical expert from Beckers Poland came to the local site in UAE and supervised the trial lot paint production. The sample coil was coated at coil coater and then ACP was produced and installed at site. The mock-up was approved by the client and the commercial order came immediately for this project.

Product features

Uniquely formulated Beckry®Tex 390 Paint system with deep matt (gloss<5) effect was supplied for this project for ACP application. Beckry®Tex is a textured wrinkle coating which has the same look whatever the angle of observation.

Depending on the desired aesthetic and the required general performances, Beckry®Tex is tailored with the right resin / crosslinker / additives composition.

Beckry®Tex is a textured surface that ensures the same look, even with a low gloss finish, regardless of the angle from which it is observed. This ensures our textured coatings are quite different from the conventional flat finishes often used for manufacturing metal roofs, making them more visually attractive – and increasing their appeal to architects and property developers. Beckry®Tex also offers an exciting alternative for traditional cladding and interior finishes. We are convinced that designers will be eager to exploit the obvious aesthetic and commercial potential of these new textured products in increasingly demanding markets.
