Building financial confidence at Beckers South Africa

Financial wellbeing involves both income and the skills needed to manage it effectively. A recent workshop for colleagues at our South Africa site focused on the skills that support financial wellbeing at every stage of life.

Wellbeing at work is influenced by many things: the demands of the day, the pressures at home, the balance between what we hope to do and what we are able to do. Financial confidence is part of this picture, and at Beckers South Africa it is an aspect of wellbeing being addressed directly.

Earlier this year, LYRA, the wellness partner Beckers works with in South Africa, delivered a Financial Skills workshop for colleagues at the site. Since financial pressure and mental wellbeing are so closely linked, working with the same partner made sense. The framing was practical: how to build and maintain a budget, how to think about the difference between needs and wants, how to plan for unexpected situations, and how to keep everyday spending aligned with longer-term priorities.

Financial wellbeing isn’t only about what you earn. It’s about the relationship a person has with their money: the sense of control, the confidence to weather unexpected expenses, the knowledge that choices are being made rather than reactions. Financial education has value at every stage of life and in every circumstance, and the workshop was designed to help colleagues develop that framework.

Practical, not prescriptive

The workshop was designed to be immediately applicable. Colleagues who attended described it as easy to relate to, and several noted it helped them see their own financial situation from a fresh perspective, encouraging a greater sense of control.

Support beyond the workshop

The workshop was designed as a starting point, not a complete solution. LYRA also offers confidential one-to-one guidance and debt counseling through the mental wellness hotline, and the workshop reinforced this option for colleagues who might benefit from more individual support.

Several attendees indicated they would consider making use of the one-to-one service. The workshop’s role, in that sense, was partly to lower the threshold for reaching out.

Prevention and early action

Part of what makes this kind of support valuable is that it addresses situations before difficulties compound. Small adjustments made early are more manageable than problems that grow. Lifestyle creep, uncontrolled expenses, and the gap between income and outgoings are all easier to address proactively than reactively. Financial skills are now part of the wellbeing support available at Beckers South Africa, complementing the mental wellness program already in place.

Part of a broader commitment

The workshop builds on Beckers’ broader commitment to employee wellbeing, health and safety. Since the launch of Beckers' global mental health program, sites have continued to identify opportunities to support employees in ways that are relevant to their local context. In South Africa, that meant focusing on financial skills and confidence as an important contributor to overall wellbeing.
