A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. The coating yields a thin film that is both functional and decorative.

Paints and coatings fall into the following categories:

• Architectural coatings make up the largest segment is this market. These coatings can be decorative as well as functional.
• Industrial coatings used by the automotive, transportation, consumer products and other industries. These coatings can serve many functions such as preventing corrosion or resisting weather extremes, friction and wear.
• Specialty coatings such as automotive refinishing, traffic marking paint or graffiti-resistant paints that keep buildings clean.
